On the Verge EP

What’s new is old, what’s old is new.

This EP contains 4 songs that were tracked in February of 2009, and put on my DIY album “Serenade for a Living Room.”

The process of remastering “Serenade…” was not unlike refinishing a piece of battered wooden furniture, like an antique table top or a cabinet. The existing layers of stain and varnish had not aged well. But underneath is beautiful wood, that if treated simply is transformed to shine.

As I was remixing and remastering the original sessions this spring, these 4 caught my ear as standouts, and so, I have promoted them to the level of international streaming. Everyone can hear it on You Tube too.

My son Zeke took the cover photo on a road trip with me this year. I found it evocative of the mood of the EP.

Two of these songs were written when I was still in my 20s. The other two at age 30. They have a sort of world-wise, post-adolescent angst and wanderlust to them.

I was also not in a band when they were written. Completely out of active Bottle Rocket Blue, these songs have an “peak indie”-folk feel of the late aughts. So without a band, I invited lots of friends to make cameo appearances and collaborations.

This sounds so drastically different from “Dive Bar Girl” or “Dolly Madison Shoes” though only being 4 years down the road from those sessions.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever had such an evolutionary leap since, musically.
